Green building is becoming the norm and the trend of structure building and construction nowadays. The reason behind is that, it is very much environment friendly, human friendly and less expensive in the long run compared to the regular buildings.

For a green building to fully achieve its goal and target of being an environment and human health friendly, it must use sustainable materials. Sustainable materials are those materials that can be recycled and reused. Below are some of the most common sustainable materials that are widely used in green building and construction.

Recycled Concrete

Using recycled concretes in green building slows down the process of over-development of the natural environment. Whenever recycled concrete is used, demand on natural sources (that leads to quarrying) is reduced. The disturbance in the natural surroundings and landscape is also minimized. Recycled concrete is commonly used at base of drainage structures, pavement sub-base and general concrete fills.

Recycled Steel

Steel is the easiest material that can be recycled and reused not only at green buildings but for other usage or stuff as well. Using recycled steel in green building reduces the amount of steel-related waste sent to landfills and incinerators. Using old but in good form steels also reduces the amount of iron ore, coal and limestone that are being used to create it. This just means, steel recycling can also conserve natural resources and energy. Recycled steels are often used as trusses.

Recycled Insulation

Reusing good and health friendly insulation such as cellulose insulation reduces waste materials and products sent to landfills and incinerators. Cellular glass insulations are made with 60 percent waste glass but it’s proven to be free from harmful CFC and HCFC.

The list of sustainable materials for green building doesn’t end with the last one mentioned above. If you need more information and advice, better contact or get in touch with green building experts nearby.

Everyone deserves to taste pure, crisp water from their facet whenever they are home. This is the same water they are going to be using to cook with as well. As such, it is only fair that the water is clean. Not all facets are able to produce the same variety of crisp water that some can. There are some water sources that are not so tasty for human consumption.

It is a good thing the Frigidaire puresource water filter exists. This water filtration system has been shown to eliminate 98% of particulates and 96% of chlorine from drinking water. That makes the water you are tasting much better tasting on the tongue. You will see a noticeable difference right away. Some say that water has no taste, but that is not true. There are some water sources that provide plenty of taste to the water because of all of the extra things that are in it. Luckily, this is not something that anyone has to deal with when they get the Frigidaire filter. It allows them to avoid that bad tasting stuff and only consume water that they want to taste. Also, since it is being used in food preparation, it keeps that nasty chemicals out of your body in this way as well.

Doesn’t your family deserve the best when it comes to their water? Get the Frigidaire filter to provide that to them.

It’s been raining all late afternoons for the last three days. Yey! And, just like that, the landscape view dramatically change from brown to green. Our small garden is rejoicing. The kids, too. Because they’re free from watering the plants. You see, to conserve water (our water system runs through electricity), they need to manually extract water from our water pump. The three kids have schedules on who’s gonna water the plants, clean the car, and the garage. It should be an easy task. But, to kids, it’s a burden. You know how kids hated chores.

So, when the rain started to fall, they’re rejoicing. And, they’re the ones who suggested we collect rainwater. Actually we’ve been collecting rainwater, but due to shortage of rain barrels, water we collected usually runs out even before the next rain comes. So, the husband was quick to buy two more barrels.

Why collect rainwater?

As I have said, we’re always on the lookout for ways to save energy (electricity consumption), rainwater will help water the plants, clean car, clean garage and others. Me and the husband dreams that one day, we can provide a water system using rainwater. That’s a little expensive to install for now. Who knows? Doing so would enable us to provide free water to run the water closet, and maybe additional faucet on the counter top sink for washing dishes. Some day. Some date.

Proper collection of rainwater.

For now, we are using those blue barrels that are commercially available. It’s made from plastic so that it will be rust-free. The husband have placed the barrels near a downspout that is closer to the garage area. Some barrels have spout at the bottom where you can connect garden hose in it. If you can not find one with a spout, it’s easy to DIY. All you have to do is buy a plastic faucet on the home depot (less than $2 each), create a small hole on the barrel, place in the faucet, and seal with a sealant. Easy.

Proper storage.

It’s a must to properly store the rainwater. Barrels should have covers so as not to be a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Make sure that the area where the barrels are located are solid and flat enough so as not to tip-over as the heavy barrel may cause accident especially if kids are playing nearby.

Collecting rainwater is one great way to help reduce the amount of carbon footprint which is harming our environment. Using rainwater as an alternative use to commercial water will greatly reduce our water bills.

Have you tried a waterless car wash?

I am a little reluctant to try this new fad in car washing. Would it really clean the car? The smooth glossy paint would have been easier to clean. I have no doubt. A soap and a sponge is all its needs to achieve that smudge free clean car. But what about the under side of the car? Would a waterless car washing removed all the dirt particularly the mud clinging to tires, and of under the hood? What about the oil?

I have too many questions. Have you tried this waterless car wash? What say you?

So you’re moving into a new abode? Do not let excitement take over you! Remember that home moving, while its all fun and very exciting indeed, can also be very tedious and nerve-wracking. Home moving is also a very significant event in every family’s lives. So it takes a lot of planning and preparation so that this very momentous happening for the family won’t turn into a complete mess.

Here are few simple guides that may help you out as you move out to your new home.

Seek Help from the Experts

Before you knew it, there are people whose duty is to help you in this very important undertaking of your family. Home moving services are aplenty around the country to help you ease out the burden of transferring all your stuff from your old home to the new one. Home mover services, for example, have helped a lot of families in the area in their journey to their new home.

Boxes, Boxes and More Boxes

You’ll never really realize the utility of those big boxes in the attic until you are set out for home moving. Packing your things and readying them for transfer will require huge boxes. This is so that they could easily be transported and moved. Not to mention that putting your things snugly in boxes will secure them, it will also be easier to unload them and arrange them later on when you have arrived at your new home.

Label ‘Em!

It’s not enough that you put your stuff in the box just like that. You should also group them according to their use or nature. For example, kitchen stuff should come together, and so are the bedroom items. And remember, do not forget to put the right labels in the boxes before sealing them up!

For some people, DIY comes naturally. They are a dab hand with a hammer, they can tell which drill bit to use at a glance and they have no trouble knowing what finish you need on your paintwork. However, not all of us are quite so blessed. Maybe you avoid the perils of a stepladder or you let issues around the house linger on for years while you put them off. However, if you know the mistakes to look out for in the first place, you shouldn’t need to worry about putting them right further down the line, ultimately meaning less time spent on DIY tasks for you.

Putting up a shelf

Putting up shelving is supposed to be one of the most straightforward DIY tasks out there. However, a lot of people skip a vital step: checking their spirit level. If the shelf doesn’t sit straight, it won’t function properly. If there is lots more weight distributed onto one bracket, the shelf could collapse. It only takes a couple of seconds, so make sure you use a spirit level to check that your shelf is perfectly horizontal, and only use sturdy brackets to avoid watching helplessly as your book collection is tipped onto the floor.

Tiling troubles

Lots of people like to get beautiful bespoke tiling applied in their bathrooms and kitchens. This might look great, but it’s not always practical. At some point, you might find that something in your bathroom springs a leak or one of the pipes needs to be looked at. If it’s hidden behind a fully tiled wall, it’ll be very hard for the plumber to access. It’s best to create a ‘secret panel’ which can be removed for easy access to the pipework. The same tile pattern can be applied to this so that it matches the rest of the wall without disturbing the plumber’s task.

Scrimping on supplies

While you might not be a DIY demon, it’s better to invest in the proper equipment from the start. This way, you don’t end up picking bristles out of your newly painted walls, and don’t feel tempted to cut corners to save money. A roll of masking tape costs barely anything, and will make a huge difference to your paintwork. Don’t trust your hand to be steady enough to paint crisp, straight lines when a strip of masking tape can do the job perfectly.

By taking just a couple of extra minutes to plan ahead, you can avoid lots of costly repair work and maintenance further down the line by getting your DIY project right the first time.

Once again, after seeing so many design inspiration on the net, my mini-plan about building a trellis resurfaced. How I would love to have a trellis built in front of our house -right in front of the lanai cum entertainment room.

This would be perfect:

Google Image

It’s a wooden trellis. Don’t you just love it?

An open trellis will be a perfect spot for al fresco dining. Or, you can let vines climb the wooden framework to add refreshing shades all around. In a realm of green living, an open space would be a perfect addition for families to enjoy the outdoors -catch the elusive sun in the winter, or have barbecue party in the summers.

I hope to save a lot this year in order for my project to come true perhaps next year.

Save to build a trellis. save to build a trellis. -That would be my mantra starting today :)

After searching for days in city shops for various storage boxes for daughter’s Womens Ski Jackets, dresses, and shoes, we turned to the Internet in the hopes of finding the exact items we are looking for. And, indeed, the Internet solved our problem. Finally, daughter’s shoes are a lot more organized now than it was before. Thanks for these shoe boxes that we had find and ordered at ebay.ph.

Stackable

Shoe boxes come in different sizes. Most of the times, few pairs are too bulky it can take a lot in such a small space.  What’s to love about these shoe boxes is that they are stackable and it has an opening right in front of the box where shoes can be pulled out without getting the box out. We arranged the shoes under the daughter’s vanity shelf and look at how tidy they look than yesterday.

Clear view of the shoes

Honestly, at 26 PHP a piece ($0.65), frugal me find it a little pricey for a shoe box. But, then, after receiving the package just this morning and see for ourselves how usable will they be, we easily find an alibi to love this storage shoe box. It’s clear plastic made will enable us to see what shoes are in each box.

As a trial purchase, we only ordered a pack of these clear plastic shoe boxes. A pack of 16 @ 26 Php each.  What say you? How do you stack up your shoes?

Green roof is a flat surface on the top of any vertical structure planted with vegetation. It provides a protective canopy for the structure, shielding it from the adverse effect of nature. It is an ancient practice with a lot of  common sense that could be very beneficial if put into wide practice in this era of global warming. Simply put, it is like wearing a hat when we want to protect our noggin from harsh weather elements.

Google Image

Modern buildings are primarily made of concrete, with flat roof decks that is perpendicular to the sun at noon. Concrete by nature absorbs heat from the sun and the surrounding air. Absorbed heat will then be released on the other side which is inside the building, and since most were constructed without natural ventilation,  the energy cost to cool down the interior will be substantially higher. Furthermore, the extreme difference between the interior and exterior temperatures will lead to moisture build-up creating havoc on the interiors’ finishing and will also affect the concretes’ strength in the long run. The usual remedy is the more expensive thermal insulation installation but green roof is the more cost effective, eco-friendly solution to this problem.

Green roof will deflect or absorb most of solar heat. The flora will regenerate the surrounding air, releasing much needed oxygen into the atmosphere. On winter, the plants and shrubs will soften the impact of raindrops and its’ roots will retain part of the rainwater which will otherwise run down the surface of the roof thereby reducing concrete degradation. For older structures, putting plants and shrubs in pots and boxes will do the trick. Some eco-friendly buildings were already designed with roof decks capable of being planted with small trees and shrubs. Stones and pebbles were laid under the top soil to filter rainwater. Voids were incorporated inside the posts and columns to channel the filtered water to the underground cisterns for future use.

The shade and ambiance created by the green roof could be utilized for the relaxation of the building occupants. A garden anniversary dinner looks fancy enough but an anniversary dinner on a 28th floor garden is as memorable as your wedding day.
