Any day this week, electric company personnel will come reading our electric meter. That will be the day I wish it wouldn’t come
I know our electricity consumption shoot up even more this April. Two airconditioning units are running. One in our room and one in our entertainment room where the kids spends most during daytime. Honestly, we do not want to go outside because the summer heat is too unbearable.
Given this scenario, I still find ways to cut our electric consumption. Saving on electricity means two things – reducing electricity bills and starting on a green living. Here’s my simple ways in trying to hit the two:
On Water Usage
Summer’s the time when two showers seemed not enough to freshen up during the day. Too much water is lost to running the shower continuously. To minimize water usage, I asked my family especially the kids to use the shower less. Instead, they need to use pail and dipper more often. In addition, we also have agreed to lessen the use of water closet. Using the pail in flushing the toilet especially when urinating will save gallons of water. I have placed on two extra pails near the bathroom furniture sets for easy use.
As for watering the garden, it’s great that we have a manual water pump where we use when watering the plants.
On Lighting
In our race to lessen our electric consumption, we’re beginning to replace fluorescent lights to LED lights. LED lights produce more lumen (light output), thus, even using a 6-8 watt LED, it can surely equate that of a 18-watt circular fluorescent light. This means using LED light can save on electric consumption. And, besides, LED light have longer lifespan than fluorescent lights. The only downturn of LED lights is the higher cost as compared to other light units. A 6-watt pocket LED light can cost 600+ Php (depending on the brand).
On other electrical home appliances
I guess, the only home appliance that was rarely turned off was the refrigerator. It’s great that our unit has an Energy Star mark. Same with our microwave oven, washing machine and other electrical appliances. It means that these units that bears the mark of Energy Star means they consume less energy than standards ones. It is interesting to note that when choosing for electrical home appliances -computers, large TV screens, airconditioning unit- try to look for that Energy Star seal in order to save on electricity costs.
As for the aircon use, we try to limit the use for maximum of 4 hours during the day and at least 6 hours during night time. We’re setting the timer and as soon as it turned off, we’re opening our windows and let the early morning breeze enter the room.
It is really hard to save on electricity especially in hot summer days like these. Letting your family know why there is a need to cut on electric consumption, they can surely handle how to do their part.
I have a friend who ask me what should she buy : an electric oven or a gas oven?
Personally, I’ll be prejudice with my reply. Of course, without batting an eyelash, I did tell her to opt for gas oven. I was in the same predicament as hers when I decided I needed an oven as soon as I got back my interest in baking. I had done a lot of reading before purchasing. I had to consider why would I need an oven for when I have a free standing gas burner for my everyday cooking needs.
If you are stuck like my friend what to choose between an electric or gas oven, here’s few factors I had considered before in choosing what oven seems to be perfect for me.
Cooking or Baking
As I said, I renewed my interest in baking. So, my main purpose for buying an oven is mainly for baking purposes only. I learned that just as how important correct measurements in creating perfectly baked goodies are, finding the proper oven is also of great importance. Knowing how electric or gas oven function at heat distribution, temperatures, and power supply can help one to decide which to choose. Which oven to choose?
Power Outages
This is self-explanatory. The reason why I opted for a gas oven because, we are in an area were power outages happen so very often. I don’t want that to cause interruption when I am baking cookies. Because baking is not something you can finish using a conventional burner
WINNER: Gas oven
Electricity
Since we are talking power supply, high cost of electricity is the number one reason why I easily narrow my choice for gas oven. While some would say there’s only a slight difference between gas and electric consumption, what concerns me was the fact that electric ovens takes longer time to heat up than a gas oven do. CLEAR WINNER: Gas Oven
Heat Distribution
Some suggest that electric ovens are far superior in distributing heat which allowed even cooking. And, since electric ovens use dry heat, it tends to protect the unit from rust as oppose to gas oven when moisture are build up inside the oven itself. However, as per baking is concerned, the moisture build up inside the oven tends to aid in baking process as it can help to make baked goodies crispier outside but moist inside. Both Winners
Temperature Control
Heat could have been more precise in electric ovens, but since it runs on electricity, temperature tends to fluctuate as oppose to gas ovens were temperature is maintained at consistent level. Of course, temperature may drop, too when oven door is opened. WINNER: Gas Oven
Cost to Purchase an Oven
When I began my search for my oven, I saw a significant difference in the price between an electric oven an a gas oven. Electric ovens are 25%cheaper than most gas ovens. Given the same distinct features. In this case, electric oven is the WINNER here.
However, citing all the others factors I have mentioned above, price is not only the determining factor in choosing an oven. Accuracy of temperature when baking and heat distribution should be on the top list when choosing what oven to purchase. After all, we all want to achieve perfectly baked goodies at every try. Lastly, choosing what oven to purchase is a matter of personal preference.

Two items off the bucket list this Christmas…
As the hubby says,
“Enjoy the fruits of thy labour”.
And so, shall I. I promised to sleep early tonight. Have been staying up late for the past two weeks now. And now that all online tasks have slowed down a bit, I’ll rest.
There’s other days to make a blog post about the items above
For now… I WILL SAVOUR THE REWARDS
Now, I am in dire need of the “Fairy” again. Our dryer seemed to have graduated. Honestly, I am not so sure how old is our twin-tub washing machine. Maybe 6 years or more? Yes. That long. It had been making our clothes clean and dried up our clothes particularly on rainy days.
I wished, the “Fairy posts” would come visit me again
I think I can use his Amazon GC now
For now, the machine was scheduled to be serviced by a repairman, perhaps tomorrow. I may have to wait, if he can resurrect the life out of the dryer. Then I am spared of huge unexpected expenses again. But, if not…. fairy please come again
One of the most important items at home are the kitchen appliances. These are the home items that makes our lives easier. With kitchen appliances, our house chores can be finished at less than the amount of time required than just doing them manually. Some items can be costly, but the amount of time saved by using kitchen helpers are much greater than its value. The time saved provides more time to spend with the family.
However, kitchen appliances are often the most commonly used household item, that is why they are also the ones which easily breakdown. It is then very important to choose the best kinds of appliances that would stand the test of times.
Here are some wise-buy tips to help you come up with the best decision when purchasing the next appliances for your kitchen.
Do a research.
Having an informed choice is always the best quality of a wise buyer. Research on the best brands that are available in the market. Always opt for the most popular brands, because their heavy following also proves their quality as a product.
Seek the help of the Internet.
Now, with the help of the Internet, you can make a wiser decision on what appliances to buy. You can visit the websites of the brands where you can see testimonies and comments from consumers. You can also visit online shops like Goedekers Appliance to look for your desired item. Online shopping is now the becoming a common way to shop.
Take advantage of sales and discounts.
Kitchen appliances can be very expensive, especially because they are made with complex processes. As a wise consumer, you should always be on the lookout for sales like the ge appliance sales so that at least you can cut back from your expenses, even just for a little.
Popular brands can be quite hefty as compared to newbie manufacturers. But, it always a choice between functionality, durability and quality over cost. These defines the true value in finding the best kitchen appliance that stays in the kitchen space for longer years to come.
Yes. There’s too many a sale going on at popular malls these days. Rainy days come, off they shed huge percentage on every item’s original prices.
Yes. I it’s been raining on discounts for would-be shoppers. I did checked out 2 appliances store at two malls here in our city and yes, they’re battling it out with offers everywhere. Offers that may have lured shoppers to let loose their pennies and bills, or credit card perhaps.
Aside from the cut on the prices, there’s freebies, too. I saw couple of small kitchen items with flatware and china wares as freebies. Plus, I saw a huge Plasma television unit with an Fully Automatic Washing Machine as FREE! That’s 9,995 pesos FREE!
Yay! My jaw dropped heavily as I saw the super tandem sale. Husband said, “See if you’ve delayed your holiday shopping last December, you could have gotten that huge washing machine instead of the free DVD Player which remained unused for months now.” To further worsen my “agony” he added, “I told you, patience has its price.”
Agonizing? Me? Perhaps.
Yet for those planning on purchasing electrical appliances, furniture, home items, kitchen tools -check out your local shops to avail of discounts and freebies.
One was on regular price. The other one at a fractional discount.
Shoppers must be grinning wide these days as there’s sales everywhere. Curtains, beddings and other home accessory were on a 50%-discount. I was not planning on buying anything because I am short on cash that day. It can not support any impulse buying. And, so I thought.
But, as everybody knew, the more you explore shops, the more are the chances for unnecessary buy.
While I was paying for my son’s shirts, I espied on the familiar red tag on the shelf beside me…

Yes. Got me this transparent fruit tray for 112.31 after the discount. I wished to get two, but the other one’s in different design. And, it doesn’t appeal to me
Aside from using it as a fruit tray, don’t you think it can be useful as a plate for salad greens, too.
And, so, after a trip to Robinson’s Cabanatuan, we had decided to dine out at the newly-renovated McDonald’s Sanciangco branch. The little kid was pestering us on her little tantrums, so we gave in.
After the McDo trip, we ventured into the nearby Puregold Cabanatuan. It is alongside McDonald’s. They have BDO sandwiched between them.
The unplanned foray had me take home this cute white electric kettle. Not on sale. Priced at 375 pesos. This cutie can hold a liter of water for coffee or tea needs. Just a 200ml shorter of the black one that I had bought last year. Fortunately that electric kettle had been snatched by the eldest daughter for her hot water needs at her boarding house.
So, there’s goes my unplanned purchases last week…I wished to go back sometime next week because I have seen glass baking dishes that are on sale, too.
What can it be frustrating than the heat these days? It’s too hot I just want to be caged in the airconditioned room all day. Double my frustration when at the height of the summer heat this awful migraine step up. Never mind the electricity surging up this summer months, let the cold air of the airconditioned room alleviates the thumping in my forehead.
After two hours locked up in a 16 degree Celsius room, luckily, my headache simmers down. It was a fresh new feeling. Happily, I grabbed the dog leash and went about with my regular brisk walking late in the afternoon.
